What Is FLX Mesh?#
FLX Mesh is a volunteer-run community mesh network serving the Finger Lakes region of New York. We use Meshtastic — an open-source project for long-range, off-grid communication using affordable LoRa radio hardware.
Our network provides a resilient communication layer that works independently of cellular and internet infrastructure. It’s useful for outdoor recreation, emergency preparedness, community events, and anyone who wants to stay connected without depending on commercial networks.
Our Goals#
- Expand coverage across the Finger Lakes region through community node deployments
- Educate and support residents interested in mesh networking and emergency communication
- Collaborate with local emergency services, outdoor recreation groups, and community organizations
- Maintain a reliable, well-documented network that anyone can join
The Finger Lakes Region#
The Finger Lakes region’s unique geography — long, narrow lakes surrounded by hills and gorges — creates both challenges and opportunities for radio communication. Hilltop nodes can achieve remarkable range across valleys and lakes, while the terrain naturally segments coverage into manageable areas.
Get Involved#
FLX Mesh is open to everyone. You don’t need a license or technical expertise to participate. See our Get Started guide to join the network, or check the Coverage Map to see where the network reaches today.
